Squish WAP
Squishdot Posted by Brendon Grunewald on Wednesday January 19, 08:31PM, 2000
from the XML-WAP-and-more-acronyms dept.
Are there any plans to make a WAP interface for squishdot? From looking at the RDF file and some Zope based WAP servers, I think it could be accomplished along the same lines as the RDF format file, but I am not sure how the details would work. Both use XML and use Zope so it must be possible. This would be a killer feature, anyone want to help work on this, pleace contact me.

    Since I *don't* have a PDA *(<hint><hint><wink><wink> <knudge><knudge>)* to test this out, I haven't been exactly focused on this, but if I *did* then things would probably be different ;^).

    It's probably easy to add this in -- it's just that I don't know much about WAP (code patches accepted, of course).

    I hope to get a device soon, until then there are a few emulators out there that run on a normal PC connected to the internet.

    I've had a look at the code for WML and the RSS stuff from the Squishdot RDF file, and come up with this bit of code. Perhaps someone can comment enhance or even test it for us.

    I have used the 70South site in the titles etc, this is easy to change. This code will only display the title of the stories (not link to the various articles just display them). Later a logo and further links need be added.

    Comments an enhancements needed!

      I have installed the code mentioned in my previous reply and it seems to work. Can someone check it with a mobile device/ PDA and let me know.
      The WAP URL is:
      http://www.70south.com/News/WAP

      Thanks
      Brendon

        Sorry, you need to set the mime type for this to work. As it stands Zope has inserted <html><head></head> at the beginning, and also set a mime type of text/html.

        The rest of it is fine, although be aware that the Nokia 7110 phone will ignore the alignment on the centered paragraph, and will also ignore the bold tags.

        I hope to have a howto document about this on the Zope site shortly, but for now I suggest you make sure the <?xml...?> is at the very top of the output, and add:

        <dtml-if "HTTP_USER_AGENT[:7]!='Mozilla'">
        <dtml-call "RESPONSE.setHeader('Content-Type', 'text/vnd.wap.wml')">
        <dtml-else>
        <dtml-call "RESPONSE.setHeader('Content-Type', 'text/plain')">
        </dtml-if>

        somewhere (this has the effect of setting the correct mime type while still allowing users of Netscape to view the WML as text.)

    WAP is proprietary and needs to be licensed!

    Actually, it only needs to be licensed (for about $20K) if your annual revenues exceeds $1 Million.

    Still,...

    See the following urls.

    There are several companies that have expressed their intention to claim royalties on WAP, Geoworks is only the first. I am not sure though that each content provider has to pay the royalty, rather equipment vendors etc. Besides USD 1' is along way off for my site (zero today).

    Does anyone have some ideas as to how to implement WAP with Zope other than the few emails on the zope list?

    IT works!!! Thanks to the help given above by Duncan Booth. For those that want the Zope code it is attached to this message. The next step is obviously to enable the visitor to not jjust get the headlines but link to and read the story itself. That is the next step.
    Have fun...
