Dept. could be a useful field
Squishdot Posted by Curtis Yanko on Tuesday January 18, 07:34PM, 2000
from the I-want-the-dept-field-to have-more-value dept.
I want to make mods to Squishdot that would allow the dept. field to be treated very much like the Subject field.

I'm trying to use Squishdot to pull together a development team. I would like to re-cast the dept field as a 'projects' field. Then my subjects would be things applicable to all projects (i.e. Bugs, RFC, Requirements...)

I thought I had heard somewhere that Butch wanted to do something with the field but was looking for some pointers on how to get it going.

I envision a tab just like the one for subject where I can add a project. It would like it to an image, create a folder and a public interface. I've begun hacking into to the code but haven't had any luck in even getting the tab displayed.

    Hi Curtis,

I am very much aware that one of the weaknesses of the current product is that while it is fine in that it works right out of the box, it becomes a big problem whenever you want to try to add something new -- the learning curve becomes pretty steep.

I'm doing some work on the next generation of Squishdot right now. Its slow work because I'm trying come up with different architecture (one that uses ZClasses and ZCatalog, plus some new Zope products of my own). And the fact that I can't work fulltime on it doesn't help either :^(

One of my objectives for this new architecture is to address the need to make it easier for these kinds of changes that you, for example, are asking.

So you can either do two things:
    1. Continue hacking away with Squishdot -- you'll learn a lot about Python, Zope and DTML in the process that you can probably write your own Zope Product.

    2. Use something else as a base -- try Mike Pelletier's ZDConfera/ZDiscussions -- they already use ZCatalog/ZClasses. They might be easier to modify for your needs. You'll also learn a lot about ZCatalogs and ZClasses in the process.

All I can say that the next generation of Squishdot is in the works -- one in which it would be easier to do these kinds of things you are thinking of, but it's not yet in a usable state.

    Regards,

    -- Butch

any idea on how long until it will be in a useable state? i timeline of when you expect major features to be implemented would be really nice.
like a big TO DO list with time estimates on everything. sorry if i am asking too much.

        Sorry no schedules yet...

At this point, I'm just into *researching* (i.e. playing around with) the basic components I plan to use for the next generation of Squishdot and getting a feel for how useful/convenient these new things are...

There will be a point in time (sometime within the next 2 weeks, I hope) when I become more confident about putting up a schedule -- usually at the point when I become comfortable that the approach/design I envision would work -- something which I'm not at yet :^(. Then I can start estimating the amount of work needed to be done and put up a schedule...

For right now I'm really into the #1 part. I see the hacking as a learning tool.

But you didn't answer my question, how/where do I instantiate a 'tab' on the management screens? I see the 'manage_option' tupple but I can't see where in the intialization that the 'manage_subjects' method(?) gets taken from the file Squishdot_manage_subjects. I assume I have to make a template like that for my 'Projects' page, which I have done. I must be missing something, somewhere, in the code.

I figured it out (darn typo!). I will try and bang out the rest of the code to support today. Eventually I'll want it to make a folder and created the user interface as well but one step at a time for now.

I'm still a little confused on how you store messages (gadfly? or objects?) but I'll wade into that next.
